Types of Media Events

The type of media outreach you do depends on several factors: type of story, financial and human resources, timing, etc. Below are several possible types of press events. Some of these, such as the breakfasts and luncheons, are better suited for stories attracting national or international press on non-breaking news. It is also important to determine the deadline of your target audience before choosing which type of press event you want to organize - Is it early or late? What's the lead time, etc?

On a regional or local level, it may be in your group's best interest to limit outreach on a particular story to faxes and follow-up calls. In small markets, your best approach may be to really get to know the handful of reporters you will be working with regularly and a large briefing is not necessary.
